An Ahwatukee, AZ women was stung by more then just a scorpion this summer. Marcie Edmonds was opening a box of air-conditioner filters inside her garage when she felt a sharp pinch with an accompanying burning sensation on her abdomen. The 52-year old woman determined that she was stung by a scorpion and opted out of seeking medical attention at first.

Over the next hour after the sting, Mrs. Edmonds started experiencing additional tingling sensations, fuzzy vision, throat swelling, darting eyes, and tense muscles. She knew she was in trouble when she lost her ability to walk and had difficulty breathing.

Soon after experiencing all the painful symptoms of a scorpion sting, Marcie Edmonds contacted Poison Control which advised her to go to the emergency room immediately. With the assistance of a friend, Mrs. Edmonds was taken to Chandler Regional Medical Center where she was informed about possible scorpion sting treatments like the antivenom Anascorp that could quickly alleviate her symptoms. Her symptoms subsided after she received two doses of the drug through an IV, and was discharged from the hospital in about three hours.

The Bill

Several weeks after the initial June scorpion sting, Marcie Edmonds was figuratively stung by a massive hospital bill she received in the mail that totaled $83,046. The two Anascorp doses, billed at $39,652 a piece, were partially covered by her Humana Insurance. Edmonds was held financially responsible for the remaining $25,537, and said the physician never talked with her about the cost of the drug or treatment alternatives.

Scorpion Control

Scorpion control is a must for those living in Arizona. Scorpion Control professionals offer year round treatments for approximately $400. Doing the math in my head, Mrs. Edmonds could have possibly saved herself $82,600 and avoided this nightmare altogether, if she solicited the help of an experienced exterminator.

Monsoon Brings Phoenix Creepy Crawlers

Arizona’s monsoon season officially wraps up at the end of the month. All this monsoon moisture we receive during the summer months creates the perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes and other pests. Lots of critters come along with the rain, heat, and the humidity which offers the perfect combinations for insects to thrive, grow, and expand around your house.

People see a lot of insects during the monsoon they wouldn’t normally see. When it rains it floods out where they are hiding. They come out to get away from the water, looking for a dry spot.

What’s crawling around Phoenix during monsoon season?

Tarantulas can often be seen looking for a cozy hideout during monsoon season. Experts say they are a definite eyesore, but are not particularly dangerous. Their venom is no stronger then a bee sting and they will only bite as a very last resort.

Giant Vinegaroon, Mastigoproctus giganteus

The same can be said for the Vinegaroon, a popular yard dweller.  They are very intimidating in appearance, but are relatively harmless.

The Bark Scorpion is a very common and dangerous Phoenix pest. These scorpions are always in search of the water left by the monsoon storms. You’ll likely see many of more of these pests because the monsoon rains will flush them out of their homes. There are more of them in the city then in the desert.

A Mosquito feeding on blood

The West Nile carrying mosquitoes are more prevalent during the monsoon season because they breed in stagnant water left by the monsoon rains. It’s important to drain any stagnant water around you property, like that found in puddles, bird baths, and tire swings, to help control these deadly bloodsuckers.

Black Widow Spider

The most dangerous of all the monsoon pests– The Black Widow spider. She can cause damage with a single bite and is most prominent around the house. The Black Widow actually reproduces in very large numbers.  Right now it’s mating season so you have to be very careful.

If you are seeing any of these popular monsoon pests in or around your property, contact a Phoenix pest control professional today!
