FOX 10 News – Phoenix, AZ | KSAZ-TV

Four-year-old Whitney Chrisman’s cartoons were interrupted Tuesday morning as she looked out the window and saw her grandma being attacked by a swarm of hostile Africanized “killer” bees.

“I saw bees and I heard bzzzzzz,” said Whitney

Little Whitney possibly saved her grandmother’s life by pushing her lifeline button and getting help. Grandma Betty, as Whitney calls her, was stung numerous times all over her face and body while outside her Glendale, AZ home. The attack left her in critical condition, in an intensive care unit, with multiple stings in and around her eyes, nose, mouth, and throat.

“Around and inside her nose and inside her mouth is just black, covered with bee stings,” says Whitney’s mom Cindy Chrisman.

The Africanized bees came form a beekeeper living next door, who is now looking at multiple fines for violating property laws and running a commercial business out of his home. The Africanized bees were so aggressive it took firefighters hours calm the bees down by spraying their hives with foam.

Africanized “Killer” Bees

Africanized bees, also know as “killer bees,” are a hybrid of honeybees from Europe and southern Africa. In 1957, the hybrid bee was accidentally released in Brazil by a beekeeper. European and Africanized honeybees can only be distinguished by molecular analysis.

These Africanized bees are ten times more likely to instigate an attack or sting then a common European Honeybee. What makes Africanized honeybees so hazardous is that they are more easily irritated, quick to swarm, attack in greater numbers, and will chase their victims for greater distances.
